Work Placement Hours

Saturday 8.10.2011
Time: 10:00am- 5:00pm
Uniform: Casual

On Saturday the 8th of October i had the privilege to work with Katrina Sheiles who is a stylist and consultant. She has a diverse client range from magazines such as Madison, Cleo, Helmet and Grazia to advertising campaigns for Myer, Wittner Shoes, Mossimo and Lexus. Katrina is also a regular contributor to the Telegraph's Sunday Magazine.

On Saturday we were working on a photo shoot with labels such as Prada, Miu Miu, Gucci and many more.  Some of the things i had to do where tape the models shoes, because all the clothes are samples and sent to Katrina especially for the shoot, it is important to ensure that nothing got damaged. I also used many other tools that i have never used before and i have emailed Katrina to find out exactly what they were called.

All in all it was a Great experience, i really enjoyed it and learnt a lot.

Working With Romy Frydman

Wednesday 5.10.2011
Time: 9:30am - 3:00pm
Uniform: Smart- casual

Romy Frydman is one of the biggest names in the magazine/ styling industry. On Wednesday 5th of October i was lucky enough to work with her for a whole day. Romy has had a very successful career so far, she has worked as the Fashion Editor for Australian Vogue for 8years and then moved to New York in that time she worked across titles such as The New York Times, Nylon US where she styled Naomi Watts, Anne Hathaway and Rose Byrne. Now she is based back in Sydney and has been working in the industry for over 15years working in local magazine's Marie Claire, Elle, Harper's Bazaar and Grazia and she is still searching for new projects everyday.
On Wednesday i worked with both Romy and her assistant Anna. We were doing to behind the scenes work that needed to be done in order to prepare for an upcoming Witchery and Gucci photo shoot. We had to do things such as book a photographer, location, Models and work out each look that would be photographed on the day. It was good to work with Romy on just an ordinary office day because as a stylist its not always about working at a shoot but rather 70% of the time is put towards the preparation.

3. During my time at work placement on Thursday night i was assigned as a dresser for one of the models on the catwalk(back of house), and on Saturday i was front of house. During this time i was directing people to their seats(people skills).

4. During the hours i only worked with a few tools these included, masking tap and duck tape. This was used to tape the bottom of the models shoes so the shoes had more grip and to avoid and falls(this is an OH&S requirement)

5. Through this experience i gained many skills such as team work, problem solving, initiative, planning and organising and communication as i was working with people i haven't met who were also older than me and more experienced.
The other girls and I worked together as a team sharing responsibility and roles when things got busy and to hard for one person to handle on their own. When a problem arose problem solving communication and initiative was used resulting in a smooth running program for example when a demanding customer was asking for something she hadn't paid for and we were able to resolve this problem by asking our supervisor what was the best thing to do, in the end we had to tell the audience member in a polite manner that what she wanted simply could not be achieved.

6. In my time at work placement i was able to gain a better understanding of how much preparation and work is put into these type of events. When something went wrong it had to be substituted or fixed as fast as possible. As fashions shows or festivals are a fast running, there is a need for quick action, organisation and thinking in order to have a smooth running show.
For example when one of the models shoes fell of while walking down the runway due to being too big, the shoes had to be changed, this meant all the shoes for that designer had to be changed.

7. I really enjoyed working behind the scenes dressing the models although it was a very stressful job with not much down time, i really like seeing how everything was done.
